Description:

The course aims at making thermal physics interesting and accessible to anyone who has completed calculus-based mechanics. Essential concepts of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics will be introduced from a unified view with a select number of illustrative examples, including some real-world applications. This course paves the path from classical mechanics to modern statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and solid state physics. Introduction to thermal physics, thermal equilibrium theory, the first law of thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics and entropy, phases of matter and phase transitions, and nonequilibrium processes will be covered.
