Description:
The course aims at advanced junior students
who has completed quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics.
Essential concepts of solid state physics
will be introduced with a select number
of examples, such as semiconductors, localization,
superconductivity, and quantum magnetism. This
course prepares students for frontier research
in condensed matter physics. Old theories of metals, crystal structures,
band structures, semiclassical transport, lattice dynamics and
advanced topics will be covered. Modern experimental techniques
will also be introduced.
Prerequisites:
Quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics
Reading List:
Solid State Physics, N.W. Ashcroft and N.D. Mermin
Introduction to Solid State Physics, C. Kittel
Principles of the Theory of Solids, J.M. Ziman
