Laboratory Studies of Thermal Turbulence

Abstract

The phenomenon of thermal turbulence occurs widely in nature, such as atmospheric and oceanic circulations; convection in the Earth mantel and its outer core; and in the Sun. A paradigm for the study of turbulent thermal convection is the Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) system. After a brief introduction of the system, I will show how RB convection can be used as a platform for studying problems that are relevant to some large-scale phenomena in nature, such as particle transport and mixing by turbulent flows in which buoyancy plays an important role. I will then discuss how RB systems can also be used to study heat transport problems that have potential for practical applications. Specifically, I will present results from our recent study of heat transport enhancements in RB convection with polymer additives and in confined geometries.

 

Brief introduction

       夏克青教授1981年毕业于兰州大学,获理学学士学位,同年通过首届中美联合招考物理研究生项目CUSPEA赴美攻读研究生课程,1987年获匹兹堡大学哲学博士学位。毕业后到北卡罗来纳州大学和康奈尔大学从事博士后研究工作,1992年加入香港中文大学。

现任香港中文大学物理系教授,系主任,并担任国际期刊Journal of Turbulence的编辑及European Physical Journal E的副编辑。

2001年获得中国高校科学技术二等奖;

2005年获香港裘槎基金会优秀科研者奖;

2009年度获国家自然科学奖二等奖;

2010年被选为美国物理学会会士(APS Fellow)。

夏克青教授是国际湍流领域内的知名学者,在相关研究领域共发表SCI论文80多篇,其中包括20多篇Physical Review Letters。发表论文被SCI累计引用超过2000次。夏克青教授多次应邀在国内及国际学术会议作大会和邀请报告并多次组织学术会议,其有关湍流热对流的综述论文于2010年刊登在国际著名学术期刊Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics上,并被广泛引用。夏克青教授已培养多名优秀研究生,其中多人被聘为国内外知名高校和研究所的教授。
