Geologically, Hangzhou is located at longitude East 118°21'-120°30' and latitude North 29°11'-30°33', with a subtropical climate. It has clear seasons. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for tourists.
October in Hangzhou features ample sunshine, and a relatively large temperature variation, from 18°C over night to 30°C around noon, with a comfortable average of 25°C.
Two international airports are close to Hangzhou: The Shanghai-Pudong airport (airport code PVG) and the Hangzhou-Xiaoshan airport (code HGH). For visitors from abroad, PVG may be the best choice. Alternatively, one can fly to HGH via a connection at the Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) or the Hong Kong airport (HKG). Visitors from Asia may also fly directly to HGH.
1. Arriving at the Pudong airport in Shanghai (PVG)
By bus. There are bus services from two companies running between the Pudong airport and the Hangzhou downtown, both departing from the same Long Distance Bus Station across street of the arrival hall of Terminal 1. Buses of one company depart the airport at 10:10am, 12:00pm, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm, and 7:30pm. It takes about 3 hours and costs (CNY) ¥ 100.00, which is about (USD) $ 15 or 10 € (euro). Buses of the other company other company depart the airport at 8:40am, 9:00am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 3:00pm, 3:30pm, 4:50pm, 5:30pm, 6:50pm, and 8:00pm, and the ticket costs ¥ 85.00. Except for the 9:00am and 10:30am buses, which make a detour to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and take 30 more minutes, all other buses run directly from PVG to downtown Hangzhou (Wulinmen, where you can take a taxi to the hotel) and it normally takes about 3 hours.
By train. There are two trains stations in Shanghai, the Shanghai Train Station and the Shanghai South Train Station. Both have trains to/from Hangzhou. However, there are significantly more trains from the South Station, esp. the inter-city CRH express trains. In addition to taking a bus from the airport, alternatively, one can take the airport bus (route 7) to the Shanghai South Railway Station, and then take a train to Hangzhou. Most express trains take from 72 - 90 minutes. (A CRH train will provide the best experience if your schedule fits. It costs ¥ 54 (2nd class) or ¥ 64 (1st class).
If you wish, feel free to try out the MagLev train. It connects the airport (between terminals 1 and 2) and Longyang Road subway station. You may get to the Shanghai South Railway Station either by taxi or the subway, which will take about 30-40 minutes.
2. Arriving at the airport in Beijing
You are suggested to take a flight to Hangzhou. A one-way ticket costs from ¥ 400-1150. A typical price after discount is ¥ 700-800.Unlike in the north America market, it is not necessary to purchase an airport 14 or 21 days in advance to get a deep discount.
3. Arriving at the airport in Hangzhou
There are airport buses servicing between the airport and downtown Hangzhou every 15-30 minutes. It costs ¥ 20, (about $ 3). The taxi service from the airport to Zhejiang University costs about ¥ 110 (about $16).
4. From Hangzhou Train Stations and Getting around in Hangzhou
There are two train stations in Hangzhou, the Hangzhou Train Station and East Hangzhou Train Station. If you take a train from Shanghai, you may arrive at either of these two stations. You are suggested to take a taxi to your hotel or the Zhejiang University. It costs about ¥ 11-30 (about $2-4) to reach anywhere inside the Hangzhou city area by taxi.
5. Bus connections in Hangzhou
This is the least wanted way of getting to the University from the Hangzhou train stations. It is the cheapest but the most time consuming. Most bus tickets are ¥ 1, ¥ 2 and ¥ 3, depending on the entire length of the route and whether it is air-conditioned. Occasionally, you may also see ¥2.5. There are tourist buses which circle around various spots of interest around the West Lake. The tickets for these buses may be ¥5.
Route 21/K21* connects the Hangzhou Train Station and the main entrance of the Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University. From the East Hangzhou Train Station, you can take Route 28/K28 and get off at the Zheda Affiliated High School Stop (where Zheda means Zhejiang University), and then walk 3 blocks to the main entrance of the Yuquan campus. Between 21:40-5:05am, Route K228 serves between the East Hangzhou Train Station and the main entrance of the Yuquan campus. (* The letter K in the route number denotes an air-conditioned bus service.)
Never the less, if you just need to get back to the Yuanquan Campus from somewhere not very far, bus routes 815, 16/K16, K228 (between 9:40pm-5:05am), 21/K21, 15/K15, 527/K527, K293, 82/K82, 28/K28, K89 all stop at the main entrance of the Yuquan Campus.
